The Lariat Necklace - The Dazzler Lariat isn't as long as the Galaxy Lariat in the previous post, however, there are still many ways this lariat can be worn. These are just a few ideas. If you have any additional ideas please post them here.

You can simply tie it any place you like and let the pendants fall where they please you most.

Or you can just lasso the black garnet though the hoop.

Blue Druzy Necklace - Azurite Lariat - Gold Dipped Leaf Lariat - Galaxy Lariat
Extra long lariat made from 14k gold filled flat cable chain can be worn as many ways as your imagination wonders. So far, I've found four great looks. All are posted below.

Yes, the sparkling Azurite pendant is really that blue. Bright electric blue with natural sparkle. It's amazing. I just can't stop staring at.

The leaf is an extra long natural (real) leaf with a 24k gold heavy overlay.

The leaf and azurite are attached with 14k gold filled wire and a sparkling gold tundra sapphire.

The two interlocking links are handcrafted from 14k gold fill.

The chain measures 37 1/2 inches (approx 95 cm)
The Azurite is 27 x 19mm
The leaf is 87 mm long
Total length is 43.5 " long (approx 111 cm)

Two Ways to Wear as a medium length necklace:

Top Photo: Wrap twice around neck. Slightly uneven so that the links and azurite rest higher than the leaf. Thread leaf though links.

Bottom Photo: Fold chain in half. Slightly uneven again so that the azurite and links rest higher than the leaf. Hold folded part of the chain near the hollow of your neck and wrap the rest of the necklace around your neck so that both ends meet at the hollow of your neck. Thread lariat though the folded part of the chain.

Two ways to wear this necklace very long:

Left Photo: Simply tie the chain where you want it to meet on your neck.

Right Photo: Thread the leaf though the links. Pull leaf (gently) until it rests where you like it.

Making a wire coil quickly using a wire as the mandrel.... ON THE CHEAP.

If you are like me you have probably been making your coils by hand - wrapping one wire around another. After a day, your hands become stiff and tired. I would like to keep using my hands for a long time, so I started to look for new methods.

The first thing I came across was the coiling gizmo deluxe. It's $200 and quite large. I then browsed the other coiling gizmo products, but they didn't do what I needed them to do. I wanted a wire to be the mandrel - the "rod" another wire is wrapped around. In these kits you use an actual rod/mandrel to wrap the wire around. (hang in there with me)

All this research and price tags got me thinking about ways to make a coil using a plain old drill. I am sure I am not the first person to make this discovery but there isn't a lot of information out there on how to do this.

For this particular project I used 12" of 24 gauge wire and 10" of 26 gauge wire.
The 26 gauge wire will be used to wrap around the 24 gauge wire. (All half hard - dead soft gets too squirly)

Next grab a regular old drill - I had one in my garage. Place it on a hard surface.

Open the chuck a little bit - enough to insert your wires.
Insert the larger/thicker gauge wire (24g) about two inches into the dead center. Close the chuck a little bit. Then put the smaller/finer gauge wire (26g) in one of the 3 prongs. I usually choose the one furthest from where I am sitting. Close the chuck as much as you can.

Next, I manually wrap the finer wire around the thicker mandrel wire a few times to get the coil started. Wrap toward yourself.

Next, start the power on the drill very slowly. I find holding my fingers as shown in the pictures stabilizes the wire the best. (no, I do not have glamours nails, sorry) You want the wire to wrap as closely as possible - a straight up and down position works best. You will need to practice to get the feel.

If you screw it up. Just unwrap it manually and re-wrap it as best as you can.

Here is what a finished coil looks like.

I prefer my coils to have tails on each end.

My latest reading topic is about SEO - Search Engine Optimization. It took me a long - long - long time to start connecting the dots about how all of this works. (And I still have many dots to go) What I really want to do is make jewelry - however - if no one sees it, no one buys it - and then I get featured on TLC's Buried Alive. Shudder.

Well, I read tidbits from all over. I read on the Esty Forums, Blogs, web sites... any advice that was easy to follow. I slowly began making tweaks to help my odds of being searchable. One of the biggest and best tweaks I've started making is changing the titles of my jewelry. For example, I like to give names to my jewelry like Hot Hoops, Breathless and Glitz because that they way them make me feel. After I began connecting the dots better, I found out this is not how to name items when selling them on-line. I found out one has to name their items how one searches for them.

My task of renaming titles more descriptively is a major work in progress on my LauraHunterJewelry Etsy site. However, last week I began to notice one particular search term show up in my Google Analytics that was bringing good traffic - good meaning lots of views, low bounces, stayed on my site 2 minutes plus and went a few pages deep. "Hey, this looks interesting!" I thought, and followed the white rabbit down the rabbit hole.

That meaning, I did the search myself and this is what I found.... my Hot Hoop Earrings .... oops ... my Gold and Silver Hoop Earring with Chalcedony - Two Toned Gold and Silver with Aqua Chalcedony - Hot Hoops in Aqua on page one of Google Shopping! Yeah, success! I then found four more earrings within the first eight pages. I was so excited that I took a picture. Go ahead and say it, "DORK!"

My plan is to keep hacking away at this because I heard that the minute you look the other way you can loose your position. So onward I go.

An Update on my Handmadespark impulse: Since August, 13 the site has seen 16 visitors with 31 page views. Ick. Referrals to Etsy: 0 -

Gold Dipped Feather Earrings - Wire Coiling

Gold Dipped Feather Earrings
Yes they are real feathers! The feathers go though an electroplating process where a thick layer of 24k gold adheres to a coating of brass over the feather resulting in a real feather with Gold Overlay. I think these feathers are H-O-T!
I decided my own jewelry collection was becoming sparse -since I sell what I make- and made a pair just for myself. It must have been great advertising because I received orders for TWO more pairs of earrings. I have one pair of feathers remaining. I am wondering if they will ever make it to my Etsy shop?

About the wire coiling. I have been twirling these babies by hand for awhile now. I thought there must be a better way - without spending a fortune. I figured it out. The results are impeccable with a little practice. Stay tuned for a tutorial on making a coil, using another wire as the mandrel.

Talmadge Art Show - May 2010

I had some terrific neighbors at the Talmadge Art Show this weekend. All jewelry designers! Yes, that was an exclamation point.

What I find interesting is how we all can use the same materials and turn out jewelry/art that is completely different.

Behind me was Miriam Jewels. Miriam crochets 28 gauge sterling silver or 14k gold filled wire. I have seen crocheted jewelry before but NOTHING like this. Just beautiful. She said it's a Peruvian technique. The thinnest gauge wire I use in my work is 26. It's amazing what one can create with wire. Check her out: http://www.miriamjewels.com

My neighbor to the right Silver on my Mind, had jewelry that is much bolder than mine and they set stones. Both of us have a thing for blue chalcedony right now and both of us had it in our display, however both of our uses were completely different. Bold vs. Delicate

Progression of new materials

Here is the progression from the simple Smoky Quartz and Pink Topaz earrings in the picture below.

I've decided to make more hoops. I just love hoop earrings! These are formed into an organic diamond shape using my WigJig Centuar. I then hammer the sterling silver with a mallet to harden it. Next I hammer it with a chasing hammer to flatten the silver in just the right spot. What I get are some lovely organic shaped hoops.

I added some AAA smoky quartz, Mystic Pink Topaz Birolettes and some AAA micro faceted onion cut Peridot.

What's even better --- the gems can easily be taken off and on for versatility. Two earrings in one.

I've hammered out four sterling silver and three 14k gold filled hoops for this weekend. I hope to have all the gems attached.

Sea Gems

I will be making a limited quantity of sliced shell and gem jewelry. My sister in law found these lovely shells in a shop while on vacation and brought them home to me thinking I could make them into jewelry. She was right. Here's my first one.

This shell is named Thias. I wrapped the Thias shell with 14k gold filled wire and attached 3 georgous citrine heart shaped briolettes to each shell. The glimmer of blue are tiny facetted rondells of Topaz.

This will be listed on Etsy today for $74

A sign that I am busy - more than one project going at once. One idea leads to another. Those earrings are just a start. Perfect, smooth smokey quartz drops, faceted beautiful green tourmaline, and gorgeous micro faceted pink topaz! I am thinking about adding removable hoops to this design. Gotta toy with that.

Check out that Citrine over to the right in the bag. OMG! It's perfect and a gorgeous yellow orange. I have to do something special with those.

Above the earrings are onion cut peridot. I am thinking pink and green. Why not? Have fun - it's jewelry.

All I need to do is add the clasp to this bracelet. Polished smooth Ruby, Labradorite, Amethyst, and Tundra Sapphire, compliment a sterling silver chain and hand forged sterling silver clasp. The three large links are the beginning part of the clasp. I still need to add the hook.

After one year of neglecting my blog - I have decided to give this a try once again. I had a huge case of artistic block. Finally inspiration hit a few months ago and I have been busy once again. Here is a picture of some of my new materials. Some of my favorites include London Blue Topaz, Swiss Blue Topaz and Aqua Chalcedony. Cats Eye Briolettes

These Moss Aquamarine Cats Eye briolettes are so gorgeous! They are so shiny that they appear wet and serpent like. I find them absolutely memorizing.

I wanted to share what they look like with you. As well as some of the designs I making.

Pictured here to the left is a pendant necklace with multi sized Cats Eye. The stones in this particular necklace start off dark rich green at the base and then gradually become lighter tuning into a milky green shade. The cluster of stones hangs from a handmade ring that is then hammered for texture and shine. (Hard to see in this photo)

The earrings pictured above are a similar design with handmade hammered rings and these beautiful stones adorning them.

Stacking Rings - Sneak Preview

Sneak Preview

I love stacking rings and have been admiring them for sometime. I hope you like them too!

The rings pictured in the photos are the the ones I made for myself. I was experimenting with size, shape and texture. Each ring is 12 gauge (about 2mm thick). With my samples I found about four rings to look good on my hand. My ring size is 5.5 when I am cold and 6 when I am hot.

The photos are not all that great since. They are not the "official" photos. When I am ready to sell them, I will have much better photos for them. It's hard to see the texture in these photographs. Remember this is just a sneak preview.

My goal is to have them look textured, organic, grainy and rough while still having shine and smoothness.

I have most of the rings soldered, shaped and textured. (Still working a few more for texture and shape) Then, I just need to polish away. I hope to have them all done in a week or so.

I am wondering what finger people are interested in wearing stacking rings on? I have been wearing mine on my right ring finger. Let me know.

Lost In Space

What the heck happened? Well first I was burned out from the Holiday Season. Wait back up.....first I was rear ended in October '08 on the freeway. My car was totaled. It didn't look like a mad wreck or anything but the frame was bent on my Audi, among other things, and fixing it was just a wash. Well, let me say, photographing jewelry and making jewelry with a strained and sprained back and neck is NOT fun. October is obviously the beginning of a very busy time....so the Show Must Go On...so to say. Lots of art and craft shows and lots of things to be done personally and I needed to recover all while caring for a baby. To say the least, by the time January rolled around I was totally burned out!

My goal was just to take it easy during January. Well with the slow economy, no shows and slow as hell sales on Etsy, January easily turned into February, which easily turned into March and now I am staring April right in the face! I guess I have been in a bit of a creative slump as well. I certainly have projects on the horizon. Which I will discuss here in a bit. Just to top off the steaming pile of turd.....I just had basal cell skin cancer cut out of my left shoulder last Friday. I am now sporting some lovely blue stitches and a bandage. The limited mobility is lots of fun too.

I was just accepted in the May 3 Talmadge Art Show for my second spring show with them. Hummm, better get crackin'! I also need to figure out this whole web world if I want to even survive on Etsy. My plan was to do more sales via the web so I could spend more time with my son. Again, better get crackin'!

I will be posting a new necklace in the Etsy shop this week....the Moss & Leaf Necklace!

The Moss & Leaf Necklace's main focal point includes an exquisite 24k gold dipped Birch Leaf. The necklace strand has six handmade 14k gold-filled rings with mossy colored nuggets of Chrysocolla adorning the center of each ring. The chain is 14k gold-filled.

I just love gold dipped leaves. I remember my mother had a necklace with one when I was a little girl....sometime in the late 1970's possibly early 80's. When I came across these leaves over a year ago, I fashioned a similar necklace to this one for her. However, her leaf is a dipped Aspen and inside of each ring sits Murano glass with a shape that is reminiscent of a falling leaf. Every time she wears it she said she received many many compliments.

Funny thing about the necklace I made for my mom; she was wearing it when I was in labor with my baby. I reminded her that she was wearing it, last time she wore it, but she doesn't recall. I guess I must have been focusing on it as my little distraction. Now that's a necklace! :)

Snow Queen Finally UP!

The Snow Queen 2 Necklace has been completed for some time now. I just have not been able to photograph it properly. As you can see there is still some glare and bright spots on the Quartz Crystal....but this will just have to do.

Bogus Etsy Purchase

Okay, so I am going to gripe this morning.

Yesterday morning I logged on Etsy bright and early to list an item for all those holiday shoppers at work. This item (an expensive item) was immediately purchased. I was quite pleased and immediately told my husband the good news.

Then 5 minutes later I receive this e-mail.

"my niece is on my account helping me set it up. she ordered something, i think. please cancel the invoice. sorry."

Well, as you can imagine I was bummed.

But, what I was even more bummed about is that I lost about 20 hearts on the item. I see the hearts as very valuable. Someone on the Etsymom Team was kind enough to include my African Sky Necklace in their treasury and it received a lot of notice and a lot of hearts.

So now, that I have filed all the refund stuff with Etsy...I now have to recreate the whole listing. (Apparently I was supposed to relist before I reported the cancellation to Etsy...but I was concerned about loosing the hearts and the emails all crossed and now I am out)

So this all ate up an HOUR of my time yesterday morning. And a good amount of time relisting. And some time stewing about it in my mind.

Plus, I started thinking about all this: When you get to the point of clicking the purchase button...you know what you are doing. It's pretty obvious. And if your niece is helping you with your Etsy store...she is probably savvy enough to know what is going on. I wonder if they were just seeing what would happen when you make a purchase....at my time and expense?

I posted this mishapps to the Etsymom Team Board and the Etsymoms have been so sweet and supportive....sending hearts. Littleras.etsy made a good point, at least the seller said something so I wasn't waiting around for days to see what happened.

To shake off the bad mojo I have decided to include the matching earrings with the necklace ...free with purchase.

BUT what a pain in the neck all this ordeal was.

So, this week I do plan on posting some new items on Etsy. All of my free time was devoured by Bogus Purchase Episode. I will also be posting tomorrow on my blog, finally, the Snow Queen Necklace with the hammered jump rings. Stay Tuned.

Yesterday at the Talmadge Art Show

The Talmadge Art Show held , November 23, was filled with lots of interesting treasures.

There were many artists with great works for sale. To my right was a woman who did awesome silver smithing. I watched so many attendants touch this super long and weighty handmade sterling silver chain all day long. The amount of work that went into the chain must have been immense.

To my left was a woman who made her own lampwork beads....wow! I only look at the stuff to make it in the Rio Grande catalog and wouldn't have a clue what to do with it.

Behind me was a woman who took vintage parts and made jewelry, Lizzie B. I got a Christmas present for myself there. A cute bracelet made out of old typewriter keys which spelled out PEACE. Her concept was kind of Steampunk, which I think is so cool. I couldn't bear to deck myself or my house out living that lifestyle, but I really appreciate the whole concept of it. Love IT!

Across from me was an artist, Anesart, who made these great fairy men who had hose nozzles for U KNOW WHATS. They were a hoot! I wondered around an happened upon a gal who made hand painted purses. Sounds weird, but they were quite lovely ....www.marionrenee.com
I could have spent all my earning in one day.

I did this show last November as well. I remember line for check out at one point was really long. (They lined up past my table) This year though, the line never got long. The checkers move pretty quickly at the show..so I am chalking it up to the economy. Interestingly, I noticed folks at my table were making much smaller purchases than they did last year. People were buying gifts again but they were smaller than last year. Much smaller. Did anyone else out there notice this?

Getting Ready for more San Diego Art and Craft Shows

It is certainly a busy time of year right now. I am getting ready for four major events! I will post them below. I always feel like I just need to make a few more pieces so that I am throughly prepared. It usually pays off though. On several occasions, it's that last item I squeezed in time to make that sells!

My next show is for the Rady Children's Hosptial Axillary fund raiser. There were really a lot of quality items for sale last year. The best part is that a portion of each sale goes to the hospital! If you can possibly make it Wednesday morning...please come by. I will be VERY tired...but happy to be there. (Why will you be tired Laura?) Because I am going to the Madonna concert the night before! I am so excited. I am going with my girlfriends. My husband is staying home with the baby (and will be texting me election results). ...So being tired will be worth it.

More Preparations

So many things to think about this week.

I am heading into my first two shows next week. I need to make sure all my jewelry has hang tags. I also need to make sure all the jewelry is polished and looking good. I typically use the Sun Ray cleaning cloths or liquid. Both work great! When I sum it up here, it doesn't sound like a lot of work...but it's funny that it turns out to be pretty time consuming. I also need to pick up the jewelry I have on display at Chakra Pilates.

It's Friday.

It's Friday. Makes me want some fries. I have eaten a lot of comfort food this week. Mac n' cheese...Cheese enchiladas....I am beginning to see a cheese theme here. I am trying to recover from my car accident last week where my baby and I were rearended on the freeway. Baby is okay. I am still sore. It makes working on jewelry pretty difficult since I bend over a lot. Sadly my car was deemed a total loss yesterday.

I have so much to do right now since I am getting ready for many holiday shows. My first one is coming up on Monday, October 20th at 10am at JavaMama Cafe in La Mesa, California. There will be many items for moms and babies for sale.

I am also working on a slew of simple earrings for a "Under $20" rack. They are basically small stones (usually briolette) and wire wrapped. They range anywhere from $11 to $19 depending on the stone and the type and gauge of wire.

I am hoping to be better soon...so I can get the ball rolling again.

More Etsy Advertising

Well my Sunday advertising in the Etsy Autumn showcase has ended. Yet again, the results are so-so. Not horrible, but not having me stalking the showcase reservation page for more opportunities.

The showcase is slightly harder to track, since viewers can view the image, enlarge it, but do not have to click though to your shop. I could only track a click though. Which is what I ultimately want anyway.

Since these spaces are $15 for 24 hours...my cost for click though is $0.176 (.18 rounded up) That's a lot of dough considering a listing or relisting is $0.20. And as I noted earlier, a listing usually pulls though a few views at the least.

I picked up about 10 hearts (marked as favorite) either as a seller or on a product. I hope to see them back soon to pick a lovely gift for themselves or someone else.

Would I do it again? Maybe. I am redoing some photography. I think that will help a lot. However, at this point, I think relisting items a lot is a more economical route for me and will garner me the same visibility.

Hope this helps anyone who is considering buying an ad slot of Etsy.

What a day yesterday. Someone hit me and the baby in my car on the freeway yesterday. We are okay. I am banged up. Apparently car seats work pretty well. Thank God! My car on the other hand doesn't seem so happy. I guess I will find out what's wrong today.

It looks as though Fedex will drop off my lighting today. I will be moving away from natural lighting to using photo lights and/or a light tent on my jewelry. On my way home from Pilates yesterday, I stopped at the craft store to pick up some lovely paper for back drops. On the way home is when my car got hit. The paper doesn't look so good anymore.

Before my car was towed, I asked my husband to get the stuff out of the trunk. I asked, "did you get the paper?" He said, "that wrinkled up paper?" Sigh. I guess better the paper than the people.

creativity

Does your creativity come in waves? Mine does. I will go for weeks with out any inspiration then all of a sudden one new idea leads to another. It's kind of weird how it happens that way.

Sometimes shopping for new materials is helpful. Sometimes browsing though fashion magazines helpful. Sometimes nothing is helpful. Luckily, I am currently on a creative wave. I keep a little book on my bench so I can jot ideas down and sketch out my ideas. It seems like more ideas come as I am working on my jewelry.

So what is happening now? Well I have modified the shape of my hoop earrings. I wrapped my tear dropped shape earrings around a wider base (the bottom part) and it makes a more circular tear drop shape. (Is that making sense?) Anyhow, I really like it. I will keep the original shape for my designs I have been making for awhile, like the Coral and Turquoise bead hoops pictured above. I think I will make some plain hoops in gold in silver in this new design as well. Sometimes it's nice to have some basic hoops.

I am currently ramping up on new designs and inventory for all the holiday shows. Yea!

hammered jump rings

Happy Friday!

It's already shaping up to be a crazy day. I have a hair cut appointment I completely forgot about at 11:45; my husband ran over a bolt yesterday and we had to take his car in to get repaired this morning and I can hear Aeron rolling around in his crib....not taking a nap. Hope things go more smoothly...like my hair. I hope my hair stylist will tame the mop on my head, which I unfortunately have no time to straighten anymore. ;(

Today's topic is a continuation of yesterday's discussion about the Snow Queen Necklace. But this time it is a HOW TO make hammered rings. (jump ring that is) At first I was making teeny tiny 6mm soldered jump rings myself, but soon discovered the work to be quite grueling. I enjoy making large, heavy gauge ones, but will leave the teeny tiny ones to someone else.

For hammered jump rings to use in necklaces, bracelets and earrings, I start with purchasing 6 mm heavy jump rings. Usually about 19/18 gauge. I then use a bench block and a chasing hammer to pound them flat making sure that the circle is even on all side. Once finished, I clean the rings in jewelry cleaner. I like the one by SunRay ...they make those fantastic cleaning clothes as well. That is it. It's pretty easy...but takes some time. The end result is pretty nice.

Since it is Friday I will be posting a new item on Etsy today. They are onyx colored Cubic Zirconia pendant earrings. They are long, elegant and real eye catcher. They are paired with two Swarovski Crystal bicones in Vitrail. Ohhhhlala!
